Sprinkle this delicious Seaweed Salt onto your food to boost nutrients, add beautiful colour and smoky, umami flavours to your plate. This product was selected as a finalist in the 2021 New Zealand Food Awards!
A way to naturally iodise your salt without the need for chemicals and additional nutritional supplements.
Ingredients: Organic fine salt, Atlantic Dulse (Palmaria palmata), Wakame (Undaria pinnatifida).
This is a sea salt like no other – the seaweeds add an intense nutrient boost and incredible umami flavour. Atlantic Dulse flakes (harvested from an organically certified area) and New Zealand wild harvested wakame seaweed (from the pristine ocean around the South Island of NZ) are hand blended with New Zealand organic salt to create this delicious blend. The seaweeds are dried naturally to preserve nutrients and tested for contaminants.
Colours may vary depending on seasonality.
We offer a starter size and a refill pack.
How to Use Seaweed Salt?
Replace regular table salt, sprinkling to taste on any meal. Shake before use.
Check our recipe section for inspiration on using seaweed salt in your food.
Three reasons to use seaweed salt vs regular table salt?
- Umami flavour – each seaweed has a unique flavour. Umami is known as the 5th taste and will deepen the flavours of other ingredients in your meal
- Visual appeak – enjoy the new colours on your plate from the crimson dulse and darker wakame!
- Possibly most important, from a health perspective…..nutrients and minerals – boosting your micronutrient intake. The ocean has an abundance of minerals, nutrients and vitamins, many of which are depleted in our soils, so in our opinion, Sea Salt is a preferable alternative to rock salts. Consider that seaweeds are naturally very efficient at absorbing nutrients from the ocean. They are widely regarded as the “best natural source of iodine”, and nearly our entire product range offers a source, or excellent source, of iodine, where the serving size is sufficiently large. (Note, as this product is a salt product, you will note we suggest a smaller serving size!). It has been said that salt cravings are the result of a mineral deficiency…this is one product to address just that! We like to refer to this Harvard study, which encourages improving diet in the first instance, before adding made-made nutritional supplements. Most nutrients are more potent when they come from our food and have not been processed in a lab. Plus, food tastes better and is often cheaper than nutritional supplements, not to mention less of a hassle as you can simply add it to what you are already eating or preparing to eat.
If you are interested in consuming more seaweed from a health perspective but are not sure you like the flavour, we suggest you start with Kelp Salt.
How we harvest, test our pack our seaweeds
Our seaweeds are harvested locally and from international waters as not all edible seaweeds grow around New Zealand, and some that do grow here are not able to be commercially harvested at this time. We air dry (to preserve nutrient density) and then mill the seaweeds to blend into our seasoning ranges. Pacific Harvest specialises in seaweed, and has been trusted by the nutritional community since 2002. We test all our seaweeds for contaminants in external labs, before packing them by hand in our food grade facility in Auckland. We recently removed the zip lock from our bags to reduce the amount of overall plastic in the bag. Please use the resealable sticker we provide to keep moisture out.
Recycling packaging on our salts
We recently added cardboard boxes to our range to ensure the stores who stock these products can stand them on shelf as the pouches we previously used fell over constantly! Seaweeds are also light sensitive so the card provides added protection. Please pop the boxes into your worm farm, or in kerb side cardboard recycling.
The plastic pouch can be recycled through soft plastic recycling schemes. Ideally we’d not use plastic but as seaweeds are hygroscopic (attract moisture) we need to ensure we can keep the seaweeds food safe. Compostable options don’t currently provide adequate moisture barriers.
Our jars are all refillable or reusable. If you wish to do neither of these, please place the used jar in your household recycling. Please read more on our packaging journey here.
A word of warning on iodine
Kelp offers an insane amount of naturally occurring iodine. Please pay attention to the serving size suggestions on pack and consult a health care professional if you have concerns about your health or further questions about iodine.
