Sprinkle this seaweed infused organic New Zealand sea salt onto your food to boost nutrients, add beautiful colour and smoky, umami flavours to your plate.
This sea salt contains Atlantic Dulse flakes (harvested from an organically certified area) and New Zealand wild harvested wakame seaweed (from the pristine ocean around the South Island of NZ). The seaweeds are dried naturally to preserve nutrients and tested for contaminants. This is a sea salt like no other – the seaweeds add a nutrient boost and incredible umami flavour. It has been said that salt cravings are the result of a mineral deficiency…this is one product to address just that, due to the extra nutrients and minerals (in addition to sodium) naturally occuring in seaweeds*!
The ocean has an abundance of minerals, nutrients and vitamins, many of which are depleted in our soils, so in our opinion, Sea Salt is a preferable alternative to rock salts.
This size is a starter size but if you are already a super user, consider our hospitality size of this seaweed inspired sea salt. If you prefer less seaweed but do want the nutrient boost seaweeds add to sea salt, consider Kelp salt.
We are delighted to launch this new product into our range and hope you like it as much as we do! Colours may vary depending on seasonality.
How to Use Sea Salt?
Replace regular table salt, sprinkling to taste. Shake before use.
Three reasons to add seaweed to sea salt?
Well, firstly, the umami flavours that seaweeds bring to salt are definitely worth exploring in our opinion!
Secondly, enjoy the colour burst on your plate from the crimson dulse and darker wakame!
Thirdly, consider that seaweeds are naturally very efficient at absorbing nutrients from the ocean. They are widely regarded as the “best natural source of iodine”, and nearly our entire product range offers a source, or excellent source, of iodine, where the serving size is sufficiently large. (As this product is a salt product, you will note we suggest a smaller serving size!)
Brown seaweeds (like kelp and wakame) tend to offer relatively higher levels of iodione when compared to red or green seaweed nutrients. However, what is lesser known is the range of other nutrients and minerals which are available from seaweeds – each species of seaweed contains different nutrients. Some of the other minerals and nutrients which can be found in seaweeds include vitamin B12, magnesium and calcium (this will vary*). Numerous and various studies, over the years, also report other beneficial compounds including Alginates, fucoidan, laminarins and lignans available from seaweeds*.
Note, the nutrient availability and density of seaweeds can vary depending on a number of factors including any or all of the following:
- Species of seaweed
- Where the seaweed is grown (environmental conditions)
- when it is harvested in the growing season
- how it is dried (air dried is preferable to preserve nutrient density)
This Harvard study encourages improving diet before taking nutritional supplements because most nutrients are more potent when they come from food, and they are accompanied by many nonessential but beneficial nutrients, such as hundreds of carotenoids, flavonoids, minerals, and antioxidants that aren’t in most supplements. Additionally, we believe real food tastes better, and is often cheaper, than nutritional supplements!
