Sea Spaghetti branches are an Eco-cert Certified Organic Seaweed (product of EU, packed in New Zealand). Kombu and Wakame are wild harvested from the pristine waters of New Zealand. All three seaweeds are tested for contaminants in accordance with the ANZ Food Code.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Seal securely once opened.

Health Benefits

These seaweeds are all brown seaweeds so offer excellent iodine as well as source of calcium and magnesium.

Brown seaweeds offer a concentrated and natural source of iodine – an essential nutrient for human health – specifically linked to immunity, thyroid, brain, ovarian and breast health.

Iodine is an essential nutrient for the production of a hormone called thyroxin which helps to regulate many body functions. It has also been linked to apoptosis (cell death) which is critical to fighting cancer – particularly thyroid and breast cancer.

This Harvard study encourages improving diet before taking nutritional supplements because most nutrients are more potent when they come from food, and they are accompanied by many nonessential but beneficial nutrients, such as hundreds of carotenoids, flavonoids, minerals, and antioxidants that aren’t in most supplements.  Additionally, food tastes better and is often cheaper than nutritional supplements!

How to use

Sea Spaghetti – Soak branches in tepid water or a liquid of your choice to experiment with flavour (will take on the flavour of whatever it is hydrated in) then pop into your soup. Of all the seaweeds in our range, this seaweed is the one that needs a little more time to rehydrate. Just soak for at least 30 minutes or boil/steam to speed the process. It will expand in size and take on the texture of al dente pasta. You can also give it a quick rinse and just add to your soup. See more on Sea Spaghetti here.

Kombu Strip – this is quite tough – we don’t suggest adding to your soup and trying to eat it but rather use it to infuse your stock with wonderful nutrients and vegan umami flavour. In much the same way you may use a bay leaf to flavour your meal, use Kombu to impart excellent nutrients and flavour, then remove. Browse our recipe section for a number of different recipes

Wakame Leaves  – wild harvested from New Zealand’s south island, this seaweed is flavour and nutrient packed.  Chop them into soups and stews towards the end of your cooking (they will rehydrate in the natural moisture and steam of what you are preparing and don’t need presoaking). Wakame has a delicate flavour  – often a key ingredient in miso soup.
