Irish Moss is an amazing sea vegetable, also referred to as Sea Moss (although technically they are from different species, but they are used in the same way). This incredible seaweed has been used for centuries to support a wide variety of ailments, from respiratory issues, bladder disorders, bronchitis, halitosis (bad breath), intestinal disorders and glandular problems to swollen joints, lung difficulties, thyroid conditions, tuberculosis, tumors, and ulcers.

Directions for making Irish moss gel
You are purchasing the raw seaweed flakes with no processing. Simmer in water to make a broth, or rehydrate and leave to form a gel which will keep for weeks in the fridge (click on the link earlier for different options if you prefer a raw gel or to use a little heat to speed up the process. Note, Irish moss gel can be applied directly to skin to moisturize or soothe as an ingredient in home-made cosmetics in addition to the below culinary uses.

How we harvest, test our pack our Irish Moss
Our Irish Moss is harvested from an eco-certified area in France, then air dried indoors* to preserve it’s rich nutrient density. Whilst similar species do grow around New Zealand, there is currently no commercial supply available at a food grade level.
Pacific Harvest specialises in seaweed, and has been trusted by the nutritional community since 2002. We test Irish Moss for contaminants in external labs, before packing them by hand in our food grade facility in Auckland.
We recently removed the zip lock from our bags to reduce the amount of overall plastic in the bag. Please use the resealable sticker we provide to keep moisture out.
*Irish Moss has a natural deep crimson colour. However, if it has been dried outdoors it can become sun bleached and take on a blonde colour. Our Irish moss has been dried indoors and therefore is a deep red.
Recycling our packaging
We recently added cardboard boxes to our range to ensure the stores who stock these products can stand them on shelf as the pouches we previously used fell over constantly! Irish Moss is also light sensitive so the box adds protection for the seaweed. Please pop the boxes into your worm farm, or in kerb side cardboard recycling.
The plastic pouch in the refill boxes can be recycled through soft plastic recycling schemes. Ideally we’d not use plastic but as seaweeds are hygroscopic (attract moisture) we need to ensure we can keep the seaweeds food safe. Compostable options don’t currently provide adequate moisture barriers.
Our jars are reusable or refillable. If neither of these options suit, please put them into your household recycling. Please read more on our packaging journey here.
A word of warning on iodine
Irish Moss offers an excellent source of naturally occurring iodine. Please pay attention to the serving size suggestions on pack and consult a health care professional if you have concerns about your health or further questions about iodine.
