3 Reasons to Use flavoured kelp seasoning in your kitchen

  1. Health benefits
    1. Kelp is a brown seaweed and contains a number of key nutrients, minerals, trace elements and vitamins, but it has exceptional levels of micronutrients, specifically naturally occurring iodine. Iodine – an essential nutrient for human health – is specifically linked to immunity, thyroid, brain, ovarian and breast health. Iodine is also an essential nutrient for the production of a hormone called thyroxin which helps to regulate many body functions. It has also been linked to apoptosis (cell death) which is critical to fighting cancer – particularly thyroid and breast cancer.
    2. We like to refer to this Harvard study, which encourages improving diet in the first instance, before adding made-made nutritional supplements. Most nutrients are more potent when they come from our food and have not been processed in a lab. Plus, food tastes better and is often cheaper than nutritional supplements, not to mention less of a hassle as you can simply add it to what you are already eating or preparing to eat.
    3. In addition to iodine, Kelp offers a range of other nutrients (such as calcium and magnesium) and beneficial compounds  including Alginates, fucoidan, laminarins and lignans.
    4. Some also use this range as a salt replacement if they are on a low sodium diet as it has a naturally salty flavour from the kelp, but far less sodium.  For the vegan or vegetarian especially, kelp offers an array of micronutrients which may otherwise be difficult to find in non-animal protein sources.
  2. Umami Flavour – kelp is the essence of umami – it makes for a wonderful seasoning, adding depth and texture to flavours.
  3. Tenderising – Kelp also contains enzymes which can soften the walls of meat and beans so makes an excellent ingredient in marinades to tenderise and add umami flavour. It is also said to ease flatulence! Adding kelp can also reduce cooking time because of this tenderising function it performs

How to use flavoured kelp seasonings in your kitchen

Just use our flavoured kelp seasoning range as you would use any seasoning in your kitchen. Many use it to replace regular table salt. Some suggestions are:

  • Chilli – Add a little heat and rich umami flavour – use as a rub or salt replacement before, during or after cooking for added nutrients and flavour in your food – it is particularly good with prawns, in a marinade and roasted vegetables.
  • Garlic – Add delicious garlic and rich umami flavour at any stage of your meal preparation  – use as a rub or salt replacement – it is particularly good with guacamole, soups, stews, and stir fries.
  • Lemon – Add zest and a rich umami flavour  – it is particularly good with chicken, fish and guacamole.

If you prefer a raw, unprocessed product try our plain kelp seasoning or kelp powder.  Do check our recipe section for inspiration on using kelp powder in your food. We have a wide range of other products containing New Zealand Kelp.

A word of warning: Kelp offers an insane amount of naturally occurring iodine. Please pay attention to the serving size suggestions on pack and consult a health care professional if you have concerns about your health or further questions about iodine. Each person’s iodine tolerance is unique.

How we harvest, test and pack our flavoured kelp range

Pacific Harvest specialises in seaweed, and has been trusted by the nutritional community since 2002.  We test all our kelp for contaminants in external labs, before packing them by hand in our food grade facility in Auckland.

We recently removed the zip lock from our refill bags to reduce the amount of overall plastic in the bag. Please use the resealable sticker we provide to keep moisture out.

Recycling our flavoured kelp seasoning packaging

We recently added cardboard boxes to our range to ensure the stores who stock these products can stand them on shelf as the pouches we previously used fell over constantly! The cardboard also provides protection for light sensitive seaweeds.  Please pop the boxes into your worm farm, or in kerb side cardboard recycling.

The plastic pouch in the refill box and bulk bag can be recycled through soft plastic recycling schemes. Ideally we’d not use plastic but as seaweeds are hygroscopic (attract moisture) we need to ensure we can keep the seaweeds food safe. Compostable options don’t currently provide adequate moisture barriers.

Our jars are reusable, or refillable. If you don’t have a need for them, please discard in your household recycling.  Please read more on our packaging journey here.

Our flavoured kelp seasoning range is made with New Zealand harvested kelp from the North Island.  All seaweed has been tested for contaminants in accordance with the ANZ Food Standards Code.

We blend it and it is packed in our own food grade facility in Auckland.  It contains local and imported ingredients, where we are unable to source locally.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.  Seaweeds are hygroscopic (absorb moisture from the atmosphere around them) so please seal securely once opened.
