Agar Powder is derived from a red seaweed. Our popular Agar is odourless and flavourless so can be used in a wide variety of recipes without impacting the flavour. Agar offers a range of nutrients including iron, calcium and magnesium with low sodium so is suitable for those on a low sodium diet.
Agar powder is a nutrient rich plant-based alternative to gelatin, a thickener for soups and dressings, to make fruit preserves, vegan ice cream, jellies, cheesecakes other desserts. It has a high fibre content (up to 70%) so can also have a mild laxative effect. It is said to soothe the digestive tract and is fat free, containing no calories.
Working with Agar Powder
Directions: Add 1/4 teaspoon per cup of liquid (some experimentation may be required for desired consistency). Heat to 90 degrees and stir until dissolved (don’t boil excessively). Will expand upon re-hydrating and set at room temperature. Read this blog for more on how much to use.
